The root chakra, commonly depicted with the color red, is also called the Muladhara chakra.  Located near the pelvis, or feet in lotus pose.  It symbolizes grounding, survival, security, and abundance.  The first two building blocks of Maslow's hierarchy of needs.  This chakra keeps us supported in our humanhood.  It is the foundation we rely on for safety.  Balancing this chakra is essential for all areas of our lives.  It is very difficult to focus on anything else (creativity, or helping others), when we aren't stable in our finances, when we don't have a roof over our heads, or food to eat.  Grounding ourselves for a happier, healthier life, is essential so that we can help others do the same.
