5 ~ The Hierophant
5 ~ The Hierophant
The Hierophant
I see this card as the connection between ones highest self, the higher realms, religion or spirituality, and the grounding, humbling human nature, or the human experience. In other words, the ability to experience both.
Interestingly, the very first deck of tarot cards was created in Northern Italy, a predominantly Catholic country at the time. So much of the traditional Tarot is based in religion, and what the world looked like in 15th century Italy. The minor arcana of these decks would eventually evolve into our modern day decks of 52 playing cards. While other legacies of these decks would be used to tell stories, or serve as inspiration for new artwork.
Out of all the cards, this has the least consistent meaning to me. And since this is a re-imagination of the major arcana based on the year 2020, I thought it was only fitting the woman depicted should be wearing a mask and cozy clothes.
This year we’ve all been given an opportunity to re-evaluate what’s most important to us in one way or another. Many of us have explored forgotten skills like bread making, while others have sat in deep meditation, contemplation, or started virtual bible studies. This piece is a reminder that we can experience both. We can have fun being humans, playing, creating. And we can also silence our minds and connect to our divine inner beings.
