The Devil

This is another piece that was hard for me create. When I got my first tarot deck at age 11, the woman who introduced me to it, took out all the “scary cards,” and advised me not to use them until I was older. This was one of them.

As I got older though, I realized the devil isn’t bad or scary. At least not in tarot. It represents our own ego, desires, impulses, and excessiveness. It is the scapegoat. When this card comes up, it encourages us to release our bad habits. Not because they’re “bad,” but because they don’t typically make us very happy.

As a piece of art, I see this as a reminder that the “devil” is really our own stubbornness. We are always capable of changing if we take responsibility for our actions. In a year like 2020, we have been forced to face our inner demons, when all else was stripped away.
